The foal rests while the mare sniffs and becomes acquainted with her new baby. This is a very important time between mare and foal, not to be interfered with unless absolutely necessary. In this delivery, the placenta (afterbirth) has been expelled, and the foal is still attached to the umbilical cord. This is important-additional blood and antibodies from the mare are transferred to the foal, even after delivery.

Now the process of bonding between mare and foal begins, with the mare licking her baby all over. This stimulates her foal's circulation and acquaints him with her smell and feel.
